Gwynns Falls / Leakin Park

One of the very best things about Hunting Ridge is that it's nestled alongside Leakin Park. Leakin Park was established with the purchase in 1941 and 1948 of the Crimea, the former Thomas Winans estate. The money came from a bequest to the city by attorney J. Wilson Leakin upon his death in 1922. As a condition of the bequest the park had to bear the Leakin name -- his grandfather had been a prominent citizen and a mayor of the city -- so it couldn't just be designated as an extension of Gwynns Falls Park. However, together, Gwynns Falls and Leakin Parks, right on Hunting Ridge's doorstep, constitute one of the largest woodland parks in an eastern U.S. city.

Everyone finds their own great things to do in the park, but here is a brief list of some of what this park has to offer:
  • The Gwynns Falls Trail
  • Miniature Steam Trains
  • Ben Cardin Pavillion and Winans Meadow
  • Carrie Murray Nature Center
  • Tennis Courts
  • Countless trails
There are also many organizations that care for, promote, and protect the park. Here are some of them: Many Hunting Ridge residents are in involved in these organizations.

For an excellent book on the history of Gwynns Falls and the surrounding region, you will enjoy a book written by Hunting Ridge resident and historian, W. Edward Orser: The Gwynns Falls - Baltimore Greenway to the Chesapeake Bay, available here.
